What is a Memo/Tag and what if I forgot it during the withdrawal?
Introduction
Some cryptocurrencies require an additional identifier—such as a Memo, Tag, or Message—to correctly credit your transaction on the receiving platform. This article explains what these identifiers are and what happens if they are missing or incorrect during a withdrawal.
What is a Memo/Tag?
A Memo or Tag is an extra piece of information used by certain blockchains to route your transaction to the correct user account.
Both the address and the Memo/Tag must be correct for the funds to be credited.
Common examples include:
- XRP: Destination Tag
- XLM: Memo
- EOS: Memo
- BNB Beacon Chain: Memo
Without this identifier, the receiving platform cannot determine which account the funds belong to.
What happens if I forget the Memo/Tag?
If you withdraw without a Memo/Tag—or enter the wrong one—the receiving platform may not credit your funds. In most cases:
- The funds cannot be automatically recovered
- You must contact the recipient platform’s support team
- Only the receiving platform can return the funds to you
Coinlocally cannot retrieve assets sent without the required Memo/Tag because the transaction has already left our system.
Important notes
- It is the user’s responsibility to check whether a Memo/Tag is required before confirming a withdrawal.
- Coinlocally is not responsible for missing funds caused by incorrect or missing Memo/Tag information.
- Always double‑check the withdrawal address and Memo/Tag before submitting your request.
